Inquiry into torture of Kuban resident resumed for the fifth time

For the fifth time, the prosecutor's office has convinced investigators to resume the case of torture of Evgeny Bunin, a resident of the Tuapse District, human rights defenders have informed. The victim himself intends to achieve the punishment of the law enforcer who had tortured him.

Evgeny Bunin, a resident of the village of Indyuk, told the human rights organization "Committee against Torture" (CaT) that on November 12, 2018, law enforcers beat him up, demanding to confess to some crime. According to his story, after he was threatened that they would beat him all the night and then still detain him as a suspect, he wrote a confession under dictation.

"During the investigation, the criminal case was stopped for five times; the last time – on April 2, 2020. Each time, investigators concluded that nobody had beaten Bunin," says the CaT's website.

According to Roman Veretennikov, a CaT's lawyer, during the year of the investigation "nothing has been done."

Mr Bunin himself has explained that he wants to achieve "at least some kind of justice." He has added that this story has greatly influenced him. "I suffered a lot and even thought about a suicide," he has confessed.
