Syrian Parliament recognizes Armenian Genocide

On February 13, Syrian MPs adopted a resolution recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey. The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) responded with words of gratitude.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that over 20 countries, including Russia, recognized the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. However, most countries of the world have not officially recognized the Armenian Genocide. Earlier, on December 12, 2019, a similar resolution was approved by the US Senate.

Ankara denies the fact of the Armenian Genocide; it is supported by Azerbaijani authorities.

The recognition of Armenian Genocide by the Syrian Parliament was reported on the Facebook by the Armenian-language newspaper "Gandzasar", published in the city of Aleppo.

The Armenian MFA has noted that many survivors of the genocide "found their new homeland in Syria, and one of the most prosperous Armenian communities there."

In its turn, Turkey has treated the resolution as "hypocrisy."

"This is a manifestation of hypocrisy by the regime, which for many years committed a massacre, ousted millions of people from their homes and used chemical weapons," the TASS quotes the Turkish MFA as stating.
