Chechen native Khasdin Murtazaliev claims grave consequences of beating in penal colony

Khasdin Murtazaliev, a resident of Chechnya, reported that a beating in a penal colony in 2016 deteriorated his health. After the sentence is pronounced, all three warders accused of beating will be sued in order to recover compensation from the state, an advocate of Khasdin Murtazaliev reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the human rights organization "Public Verdict" disseminated a video of beating of prisoners in a Yaroslavl penal colony in 2016. Chechen native Khasdin Murtazaliev, one of the beaten prisoners, was released on January 20. Shortly before that, on January 17, the court found Maxim Yablokov, a former inspector of the security department at the Yaroslavl penal colony, guilty of beating Khasdin Murtazaliev and sentenced him to 3.5 years of imprisonment for cruel treatment of prisoners. Khasdin Murtazaliev noted that not all warders of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) involved in the bullying of prisoners got to the prisoners' dock.

After a video with the beating of prisoner Khasdin Murtazaliev had been made public, residents of Chechnya noted biased attitude towards natives of the Caucasus in penal colonies of Russia. The video refutes Ramzan Kadyrov's statement about respect for natives of Chechnya in places of detention, blogger Tumso Abdurakhmanov emphasizes.

Khasdin Murtazaliev complains that he still feels the consequences of the beating in the penal colony. "My liver and kidneys are hurting now. Then, after the beating, my health condition got much worse," he said.

On January 29, the court is to pronounce verdicts against two other warders accused of beating Khasdin Murtazaliev, advocate Irina Biryukova reports.
