Azerbaijan schedules date of parliamentary elections

Ilham Aliev has signed a decree on the dissolution of parliament, and the parliamentary elections are scheduled for February 9, 2020.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the ruling "New Azerbaijan Party" (YAP) took the initiative to dissolve the parliament. MPs overwhelmingly supported the proposal.

Ali Akhmedov, the party's executive secretary, has explained that updating the National Assembly is needed to support "the reforms implemented by President Ilham Aliev." Early elections will severely limit the opposition's chances to enter the Parliament and only strengthen the "family rule" in Azerbaijan, the analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" have predicted.

The President of Azerbaijan issued a decree to dissolve the fifth convocation of Milli Majlis [the parliament of Azerbaijan] and scheduled the early parliamentary elections, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports the contents of the today's decree signed by Ilham Aliev. According to the document, the leader of Azerbaijan made the decision on the dissolution of the parliament at the request of the Azerbaijani MPs themselves and in connection with the conclusion of the Constitutional Court on the issue.
