US House of Representatives recognizes Armenian Genocide
The US House of Representatives has voted overwhelmingly in favour of the resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
The authorities of Turkey do not consider the mass killing of Armenians in 1915-1917 as genocide.
The resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 was presented by a group of members of the US House of Representatives.
"It is never too late to recognize the genocide, but today it is especially timely," the RIA "Novosti" quotes Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, as explaining.
405 members of the US House of Representatives voted for the recognition of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, 11 voted against, and three congressmen abstained.
The text of the resolution, released on the US government information website on April 8, states, in particular, that the United States officially recognizes the Armenian Genocide.
