Wife of defendant in "Ganja case" reports grave condition of her husband

Aidyn Gurbanov, arrested in connection with riots in the city of Ganja, received no treatment in custody and fell into a coma at the last phase of his cancer, his wife said. The investigator refused to change Gurbanov's freedom restriction measure.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the detention of a suspect of an attempt on Elmar Veliev, the head of the Ganja administration, in July 2018, provoked mass protests. During the dispersal of the rally, two policemen perished.

Aidyn Gurbanov was arrested in August 2018 and charged with illegal arms dealing as a member of an armed grouping.

His wife insists that he is innocent. According to her version, physical pressure was exerted on Gurbanov; and he was tortured.

Ms Gurbanova has also noted that after Aidyn's arrest their family was in dire need.

For reasons of humanity, seriously ill inmates should be released from prison, said Ogtai Gyulyalyev, the coordinator of the public Committee against Torture and Repressions, noting that the law allows, given the grave state of health, to change an inmate's freedom restriction measure, or replace the real imprisonment by the conditional one.
