Meeting with Aliev caused criticism of Pashinyan

The Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, has eloquently commented on his third meeting with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliev. The society is insufficiently informed about his actions in the Karabakh settlement, the opposition asserts.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Pashinyan spoke in favour of return of Nagorno-Karabakh to the negotiation table. Against this background, Azerbaijan has strengthened its military rhetoric. The meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan on January 16 showed an attempt to reanimate the negotiations on the settlement of the Karabakh conflict, political analysts believe.

The meeting of the Armenian Premier with the Azerbaijani President was held within the World Economic Forum in Davos. "We exchanged views on the current situation in the negotiations," Mr Pashinyan wrote on the Facebook. According to his story, "no specific details were discussed."

Nikol Pashinyan is obliged to hold a meeting with the country's political forces and inform them about the details of his meeting with Aliev, Edmon Marukyan, the head of the parliamentary faction "Enlightened Armenia", said on air of "Radio Azatutyun".

Eduard Sharmazanov, the press secretary of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), has reproached Pashinyan of the absence of principled statements on the Karabakh issue.

Lena Nazaryan, a Vice Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, has ruled out any possible "undesirable concessions in the Karabakh issue" by the new authorities of Armenia.

On December 25, Elmar Mamedyarov, the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, stated that Baku is "ready to ensure the security of Karabakh Armenians and provide them with the right of self-government," the "Interfax-Azerbaijan" has reported.

Against the background of Azerbaijan's inspiration, the Karabakh issue is causing the increasing strain in Armenia, Stepan Danielyan, a political analyst, has noted.
