Oppositionist Djeikhun Nabi detained in Azerbaijan
Law enforcers have detained the activist Djeikhun Nabi in Shamkir and brought him to Baku. The detention may have to do with Nabi's posts on the Facebook, in which he criticized Azerbaijani authorities, Sardar Nabiev, Djeikhun's father, and Ogtai Gyulyalyev, a rights defender, have stated.
Djeikhun Nabi was detained on October 23 in his hometown of Shamkir, located 400 kilometres west of Baku.
"Djeikhun was in Russia for some time and the other day returned to Azerbaijan. Today (on October 23) he was detained and taken to the Shamkir ROVD (District Interior Division), and then convoyed to Baku. At the ROVD, they told me that Djeikhun was arrested because of his posts on the Facebook. We don't know where they keep him now, or what's happening to him," his father told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
Djeikhun Nabi is a member of the oppositional "classic" Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), said Ogtai Gyulyalyev, the coordinator of the Centre for Monitoring Political Prisoners.
"However, he is more known as a researcher of the history of Azerbaijan. He is an active Facebook user; in his page he often sharply criticizes the authorities of Azerbaijan for human rights violations. One of his last posts was devoted to the 15th anniversary of the events of October 15, 2003, when a protest rally against violations at the presidential election was brutally dispersed," Mr Gyulyalyev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
