Anna Politkovskaya Prize granted to voices against violence and extremism

On the eve of the anniversary of Anna Politkovskaya's murder, the international NGO "RAW in War" (Reach All Women in War) awarded the prize named after her to Binalakshmi Nepram, the head of the organization "Manipur Women – Victims of Armed Violence", and Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievich.

Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead near the elevator in the apartment building, where she lived in Moscow on October 7, 2006. She gave her last interview to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent an hour and a half before her death.

The Anna Politkovskaya Prize was awarded to Svetlana Alexievich and Binalakshmi Nepram, who spoke out against injustice, violence and extremism "in the situation of 'forgotten' armed conflicts in their regions," the NGO said in its press release, which also notes that Alexievich and Nepram were repeatedly threatened with physical execution.

Lord Frank Judd, a member of the nominations committee, said that "Anna Politkovskaya will always remain the guiding star and inspirer of all those who uphold the highest standards of journalism and fight for freedom."

The awards will be presented to laureates in March 2019 at a special ceremony "We refuse to be silent" to be held during the Women of the World Festival in London, the "Novaya Gazeta" reports.
