CoE's Commissioner urges Russia to find customer for Politkovskaya's murder

Russian authorities have failed to investigate the involvement of law enforcers and Chechen officials in the crime, said Dunja Mijatovic, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe (CoE), on the eve of the anniversary of Anna Politkovskaya's murder.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 17, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) announced the investigation into the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, an observer of the "Novaya Gazeta" newspaper to be inefficient.

Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead near the elevator in the apartment building, where she lived in Moscow on October 7, 2006. She gave her last interview to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent an hour and a half before her death.

Five people were convicted within the Politkovskaya's murder case, but the customer of the murder has not yet been established, Ms Mijatovic said in her statement. Meanwhile, October 7 marks 12 years since the murder of the journalist.

According to Dunja Mijatovic, the search for the truth about the murder of Politkovskaya should be the main political priority. "This is owed first and foremost to her family and the general public, but is also an important obligation to uphold media freedom and safety of journalists," she has stated.

On July 18, 2018, the human rights organization Amnesty International appealed to the Russian Federation to impartially investigate the murder of Anna Politkovskaya.

A court in the Russian Federation announced Lom-Ali Gaitukaev, who was sentenced to life imprisonment and died in prison in June 2017, to be the customer of Politkovskaya's murder.
