Major Grozny supermarket stops selling alcohol

The managers of the "Assorti" Supermarket in Grozny have explained that they would stop selling alcohol beverages in the contest with the onset of the Muslim month of Rabi-al-Awal and as a sign of supporting the anti-alcohol policy pursued in the region.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since 2009, the sale of alcohol in Chechnya is allowed only from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and only at specialized wine and vodka shops.

Rabi-al-Awal is the third month of the Muslim calendar, when they mark the birthday of Prophet Muhammad.

The head of the republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, has pointed out that drinking alcohol is not in the spirit of Chechen traditions; and because of drunken drivers people are regularly killed; "however, the situation was radically changed," the Grozny TV and Radio Broadcasting Company (GTEK) has reported.

Let us remind you that residents of the Chechen Republic quite often complain about anti-alcoholic spot-checks conducted by law enforcers and detention for using alcohol. At the same time, according to their stories, the mass closure of stores selling alcohol has caused no deficit thereof in the republic.
