Makhachkala residents urge Vasiliev to focus on fighting corruption

The war on corruption should become the main goal of the new leader of Dagestan, Vladimir Vasiliev. He should fully renovate the government and dismiss the corrupt officials, Makhachkala townspeople believe.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Vasiliev to head Dagestan at least until September 2018.

The townspeople, interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, have ambiguously assessed Vasiliev’s appointment.

Mr Putin "has specially appointed a neutral person to head Dagestan," said a pensioner. In his opinion, "for the first time after Vasiliev's appointment, all high-ranking officials will suspend their corruption."

A former employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has reacted positively to Vladimir Vasiliev’s appointment. According to his version, he "knows Vasiliev as a good person and contacted him at work."

Gadji Khanov hopes that with the arrival of the new leader, "educated and competent people will come to work in regions."

However, another resident of Makhachkala has noted that he "is dissatisfied with the appointment of a person not from Dagestan to the post."

According to Yunus Aliev, in Dagestan, "there are many worthy people who could head the region."
