US state of Michigan recognizes NKR’s independence
Today, the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) has been recognized by Senate of the US state of Michigan, which has become the eighth USA state to do so.
So far, the NKR’s independence has been recognized by Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Transnistria, the Basque Country (an autonomous region of Spain), one state of Australia and a number of states, counties and cities of the USA.
The today's decision has been made by an overwhelming majority of Michigan’s Senators, who have called for the recognition of the NKR’s independence at the US’ federal level and for establishing economic and cultural ties with the country, says the website of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).
The Senate’s resolution reads that the NKR is populated mostly by Armenians and "was handed over to Azerbaijan in 1921 by an arbitrary decision of Joseph Stalin." Besides, Senators took into account that in 1991, majority of NKR’s residents voted for independence from Azerbaijan, the “News.am” reports.
