Defence demands to release Bairamly and Mukhtarly from custody

The defence had appealed against the court's decision to extend the arrest of Gezyal Bairamly, the deputy chair of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), and journalist Afghan Mukhtarly. According to advocates, keeping their clients in custody is unreasonable, while the SIZO (pre-trial prison) administration fails to provide them with the necessary medical treatment.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 17, the Nasimi District Court extended Bairamly’s arrest until October 30, and left Mukhtarly in custody until October 30.

"On August 17, on the same day, the same judge of the Nasimi District Court, Babek Gasanov, after a brief formal consideration, granted the investigators’ motion and extended the arrest of Bairamly and Mukhtarly, which was unjustified and was not supported by any valid arguments," Zibeida Sadygova, an advocate of both defendants, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

On August 18, Ms Sadygova, according to her story, submitted complaints to the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) against the extension of her clients' arrest, asking the court to release them from custody. According to the procedural legislation, the complaints should be considered within the next three days, she has noted.
