Afghan Mukhtarly's wife appeals to Georgian Prosecutor's Office for victim status

The wife of Afghan Mukhtarly, an Azerbaijani journalist, who was kidnapped in Tbilisi, appealed to the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia with a request to grant her and her husband the status of victims. This was reported by advocate Archil Chopikashvili.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Afghan Mukhtarly disappeared in Tbilisi on May 29. On the other day, he phoned advocate Nemat Kerimli and informed him that he had been brought to Baku. According to Afghan Mukhtarly, he was beaten during the kidnapping. The journalist was accused of violating the state border, smuggling, and resisting a border guard, and he was arrested for three months. Afghan Mukhtarly rejects the charges filed against him.

On June 7, advocate Archil Chopikashvili filed an appeal to the General Prosecutor's Office on behalf of Leyla Mustafaeva, the wife of Afghan Mukhtarly.

Today, Archil Chopikashvili has told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that he had little hope that the Prosecutor's Office would grant the Leyla Mustafaeva's request. The response to the appeal should be issued within 48 hours.

"The kidnapping of Afghan Mukhtarly is a pressure on Leyla Mustafaeva, who is engaged in journalistic activities," noted the advocate.
