Investigation into second criminal case against Stanislav Klykh completed

The preliminary investigation into the second criminal case against Ukrainian citizen Stanislav Klykh, suspected of insulting a public prosecutor during the trial in Chechnya, has been completed. The defence has examined the case materials.

On May 26, the Supreme Court of Chechnya sentenced Nikolai Karpyuk to 22.5 years and Stanislav Klykh to 20 years of imprisonment.

According to investigators, Karpyuk and Klykh, being members of the organization named UNA-UNSO (banned in Russia, as its activities were treated as extremist by the court, – note of the "Caucasian Knot"), on December 31, 1994, took part in warfare in Grozny near the railway station and Minutka Square, where they killed at least 30 servicemen and wounded at least 13 others. Karpyuk and Klykh denied their involvement in the conflict in Chechnya and stated that they had been tortured during the investigation.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 20, the Chechen Supreme Court (SC) pronounced the decision to send the materials for institution of criminal proceedings against Stanislav Klykh on the fact of insulting a public prosecutor. According to Dokka Itslaev, an advocate of Stanislav Klykh, at the court hearing, his client "began to behave inadequately and shout offensive remarks against the prosecutor."

Marina Dubrovina, another advocate of Stanislav Klykh, has also noted that his behaviour changed dramatically.

"The preliminary investigation into the second criminal case went normally. However, on July 12, when reading the case materials, Stanislav began to behave inadequately," Marina Dubrovina told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to the advocate, she had to file a request for appointment of repeated stationary psychiatric examination.

Advocate Marina Dubrovina has also noted that the defence filed an appeal against the decision of the Chechen SC to sentence Klykh and Karpyuk to long terms of imprisonment for involvement in the Chechen hostilities in 1995-1996. According to the advocate, the date for the consideration of the appeal is not yet announced.
