Khadija Ismayilova amnestied in case of defamation

Journalist Khadija Ismayilova has been amnestied in the case, in which she was sentenced to a fine at the lawsuit filed by former oppositionist Elman Gasanov. Khadija Ismayilova has been exempted from the penalty. She intends to seek a verdict of acquittal.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 23, 2015, the court sentenced Khadija Ismayilova to a fine in the amount of 2500 manats (1650 US dollars as according to the current exchange rate) in the lawsuit of defamation of former oppositionist Elman Gasanov (Turkoglu). The advocates of journalist Khadija Ismayilova have challenged the court's decision. The Court of Appeal upheld the verdict. The advocates have challenged the decision at the Supreme Court (SC).

On June 21, Khadija Ismayilova was notified that she fell under an amnesty in the case of the lawsuit filed by Elman Gasanov.

"I fell under the amnesty. I've been exempted from paying a fine in the amount of 2500 manats (1640 US dollars), to which I was sentenced at the complaint of Elman Turkoglu. Nevertheless, at 11:40 a.m. of June 28, the Supreme Court will consider the cassation filed by my advocate Yalchin Imanov to acquit me in that case," Khadija Ismayilova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
