Law on Constitutional Court of Georgia adopted with President's amendments

The Parliament of Georgia has adopted the amendments to the Law "On Constitutional Court", taking into account the proposals of the Georgian President, who vetoed the previous version of the draft law.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 14, the Georgian Parliament approved the amendments to the Law "On Constitutional Court". In accordance with the above amendments, the President and the Parliament have lost the right to participate in the appointment of the Chairman of the Constitutional Court. Besides, according to the amendments, the decisions of the Constitutional Court Plenum are to be made not by a simple majority, but by votes of 2/3 of the members of the board. Meanwhile, the judicial decisions are to enter into force not from the moment of their pronouncement, but only after the publication of the full text of the decision on the Constitutional Court's website.

Earlier, Georgian President Georgy Margvelashvili has treated the process of approval of the amendments as unreasonably fast. On May 31, he vetoed the draft law and returned it to the Georgian Parliament with the indication of his comments.

The President has submitted the proposals relating to the quorum in the decision-making of the Constitutional Court Plenum, the use until the end of the 10-year term of office of a judge, and the case of refusal of the issue sent to the Constitutional Court Plenum for consideration, the "Georgia-Online" reports.

The President's comments were based on the recommendations of the Venice Commission, the "Echo of the Caucasus" reports.
