HRC "Memorial" treats detention of Imam Magomednabi Magomedov as a provocation

The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" has called on the authorities of Dagestan to prevent fabrication of a criminal case against Magomednabi Magomedov, Imam of the Khasavyurt "Eastern" mosque. According to the human rights defenders, the Imam publicly spoke out against violence and against departure of young Muslims to join militants.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Magomednabi Magomedov, Imam of the Salafi "Eastern" mosque, was detained in Khasavyurt on April 8. The court pronounced the pre-trial restriction against the Imam in the form of detention in custody for two months.

The HRC "Memorial" treats the detention and the institution of a criminal case against Magomednabi Magomedov as a provocation. The human rights defenders believe the Imam is a "man whose activities contribute to the pacification of the situation in the republic."

According to the human rights defenders, Magomednabi Magomedov publicly spoke out against violence and against all intentions of young Muslims to join militants in "forest" or their departure to the Middle East.

"The HRC 'Memorial' calls on the authorities of Dagestan to make every effort to prevent the fabrication of new criminal proceedings against the person, whose activities contributes to the pacification of the situation in the republic," emphasizes the message of the human rights defenders.
