Draft law on referendum causes public discontent
The conference titled "Citizens' Constitutional Rights in the Draft Federal Constitutional Law on the Referendum in the Russian Federation" was held in Stavropol on June 21. It was initiated by the association of Stavropol non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in defense of voters' rights Golos. Commissioner on Human Rights in Stavropol Region Mr Selyukov, representatives of regional branches of the United Russia and Yabloko parties, the People's Patriotic Union, NGO activists, and academic lawyers attended the conference.
Participants signed appeals to Chairwoman of the Russian President's Human Rights Commission Ella Pamfilova asking her to protect the citizens' rights violated by the new federal law on the referendum and to Member of the Russian Federal Assembly for Stavropol Region Mr Lyisyakov asking him to vote against this document.
