Tbilisi: special commission starts appraising flooding damage

The capital of Georgia has launched a full inventory of citizens' property damaged by the recent severe flooding. All the victims will be awarded the status of ecological migrants.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at night on June 14, Tbilisi was affected by a heavy rain, which led to flooding. According to official sources, 19 people were lost. In the evening on June 18, it became known that the Georgian Ministry of Public Health had registered 457 people, including 119 children, as victims. The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia launched an investigation into the reasons of the deaths, believing that they could be caused by violations of safety regulations during the construction of the houses, which were now destroyed by water.

On June 21, Sozar Subari, the Minister for Forced Migrants, Refugees and Resettlement, said that the special commission began appraising the damage caused by the flooding.

"They are compiling a full inventory of the damage suffered by citizens. Several agencies are involved – the Mayoralty and district councils, the Ministry of Economy, which is directly making measurements, the Ministry of Public Health, our ministry and other agencies," the "Interfax" quotes Mr Subari as saying.

Based on commission's conclusions, decisions will be made on granting the victims with the status of ecological migrants, the "Georgia Online" reports.
