Reinvestigation into Ruslan Rakhaev's case completed in KChR

On the results of the repeated inquiry, investigators of the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR) have presented charges of abuse of office and intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm to Ruslan Rakhaev, a former deputy police chief of the city of Cherkessk. Rakhaev, who refuses to plead guilty, and his advocate have begun studying the case files.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 8, 2013, the Cherkessk City Court sentenced Rakhaev to 13 years in prison, finding him guilty of abuse of power and intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to the detainee Dakhir Djankezov, as a result of which he died. Rakhaev's defence appealed against the verdict to the Supreme Court (SC) of the KChR. On October 8, 2013, the SC overturned the verdict of the lower court. The case was sent to reinvestigation.

The ex-deputy head of the Criminal Investigation of Cherkessk saw the same charge, said the message of the Fund "Public Verdict", whose lawyer Evgeny Kuzyur represents the interests of the ex-policeman.

Lydia Zhabelova, Rakhaev's public defender, said that the reinvestigation found new evidence of Rakhaev's involvement in Djankezov's death.

In her opinion, Rakhaev's innocence is proved by plenty of objective facts, including the absence of any real motives in his actions.
