Defence of the former Deputy Chief of Cherkessk police believes his sentence unjustified

The defence of Ruslan Rakhaev, former Deputy Chief of the police of the city of Cherkessk, was found guilty of beating a detainee to death, treats the verdict of the Cherkessk City Court that sentenced him to 13 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony, as unjustified and intends to appeal against it. The appeal will be filed within the next two days. This was reported by Evgeny Kuzyur, the advocate of Ruslan Rakhaev.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the court hearings on abuse of power and intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm resulting in death of the victim were held at the Cherkessk City Court on October 24, 2012. On July 8, the judge found Ruslan Rakhaev guilty of committing crimes under Part 4 of Article 111 (intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm) and Part 3 of Article 286 (abuse of power) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

Lydia Zhabelova, the public defender of Ruslan Rakhaev, has expressed her dissatisfaction with the verdict. She has emphasized that the defence of Ruslan Rakhaev had repeatedly noted at trial the numerous falsifications in the case.

The defence of Ruslan Rakhaev believes that during the trial, procedural violations were repeatedly committed.

Earlier, wife and son of Djankezov supported the prosecutor's request to sentence Ruslan Rakhaev to 13 years of imprisonment, and they claimed being confident he was guilty. Meanwhile, the wife of Djankezov claimed at trial that she did not rule out that her husband was beaten by policemen who detained him and kept him overnight at the police station from October 6 till October 7, 2011.
