Torture on the rise in Georgia

The number of torture facts in confinement institutions grew by 3% in the first six months of 2005 comparing with 2004. These were the figures published by Georgian nongovernmental organisations at a meeting timed to the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, RIA Novosti says.

According to the official information of the Georgian Justice Ministry, 23% of convicts have undergone physical violence on the part of law enforcement agents. The situation in Georgian prisons is extremely unfavourable.

The conditions in Georgian prisons may well be qualified as torture, said Tea Tutberidze, a representative of Freedom Institute, a nongovernmental organisation.
