New speaker of the House of US Congress speaks in favour of recognizing the genocide of Armenians

Nancy Pelosi has become the first woman-House speaker in the US history. The correspondent of the RIA "Novosti" has reported that 233 out of 435 congressmen have voted for Ms. Pelosi.

Earlier, Ms. Arpi Vardanyan, regional director for Armenia and Nagorny Karabakh of the Armenian Assembly of America (AAA), told the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" that N. Pelosi's activities as a member of the Group on Armenian Issues was directed towards assistance to solution of Armenian problems, and during her electoral campaign congresswoman Pelosi had declared the necessity to recognize the genocide of Armenians. Besides, according to A. Vardanyan, Ms. Pelosi has always been an active participant of the actions of the Armenian community directed at recognition of the genocide of Armenians.

The genocide of Armenians has been recognized by many countries. Officially, Turkey has still refused to recognize the 1915 events to be Armenian genocide.
