In Azerbaijan, advocate asks court to apply early relief to convicted journalist

In Azerbaijan, Isakhan Ashurov, advocate of satirical poet Sakit Zakhidov (Mirza Sakit), employee of the "Azadlyg" newspaper who is serving his imprisonment, has addressed the Nariman District Court of Baku with a petition to consider the possibility of early relief for his client.

Mr Ashurov said in his conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that according to the legislation "it is allowed to apply early relief to the prisoners who have served most of their punishment." According to the advocate, under the remedial legislation, the court should consider his petition within 10 days. Now, about six months remain till expiry of his imprisonment.
