Veterans of Afghan war stop their hunger strike in Dagestan

On October 21 in Makhachkala, the negotiations of servicemen-"Afghans" with representatives of the Republic's Government and State Duma deputies from Dagestan came to the end. As a result of the arrangements reached, the "Afghans" agreed not to restart their temporarily interrupted hunger strike.

We remind you that the war veterans had agreed to interrupt their hunger strike with a demand to solve their housing problems after their meeting with Chairman of the Government of Dagestan Shamil Zeinalov on October 16.

After talking to governmental officials and State Duma deputies from Dagestan, the veterans decided to stop their hunger strike, while the deputies undertook to initiate amendments to the federal legislation, which should contribute to settling the housing problems of the veterans of warfare in Afghanistan, the "Gazeta.Ru" Agency reports.

Also, on the outcomes of the meeting, an appeal was adopted on behalf of the participants of Afghani events and the Dagestan regional branch of the All-Russia Political Party "Edinaya Rossiya" (United Russia) to Vladimir Putin, Chairman of the Party. The appeal asks to consider amendments to the federal legislation regarding provision of veterans of the Afghan war with housing facilities at the rate of 18 square metres per family member (wife and children), and equating of the category "participants of warfare" by their privileges to the category "participants of the Great Patriotic War", the RIA "Dagestan" Agency reports.
