Ter-Petrosyan leads the march of Armenian opposition supporters to the monument of genocide victims

The march of the opposition supporters that started about 3 p.m. local time (2 p.m. in Moscow) and made its way to the monument of genocide victims situated Tsitsernakaberd is currently headed by Levon Ter-Petrosyan, leader of the opposition and the first president of Armenia.

Let us note here that the march of the opposition pre-scheduled on April 24 commenced from the streets adjacent to the Freedom Square. Already by 3 p.m. local time, the whole perimeter of the Square was lined up by policemen with truncheons. However, the supporters of the opposition have gathered in the Tumanyan Street and in the Northern Avenue; then, people continued to rally near the monument to Martiros Saryan.

This was the starting point of the almost 20,000-strong march along Yerevan streets, which now moves to the monument of genocide victims. Many passers-by are gradually joining the march, and currently the number of the marchers is about 50,000 persons. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that Levon Ter-Petrosyan joined the march in the Kiev Bridge near Tsitsernakaberd and was warmly greeted by the participants of the march.

We remind you that, starting early in the morning, the monument of genocide victims in Tsitsernakaberd was already visited by thousands of people, and among the march participants there are people of senior and middle age, youth and children.

Wreaths to the monument were laid down by President of Armenia Serzh Sarkisyan, Chairman of National Assembly Tigran Torosyan, Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisyan, members of the government, representatives of foreign diplomatic missions accredited in Yerevan, and members of other organizations and agencies.

The "Caucasian Knot" had informed earlier that late in the 19th-early 20th centuries the Ottoman Turkey kept regularly prosecuting and victimizing Armenians. In particular, in 1915, 1.5 million Armenians were liquidated. The fact of the genocide against Armenians was recognized by the parliaments of many countries, including Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Venezuela, Holland, Greece, Italy, Canada, Cyprus, Lebanon, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Uruguay (in 1965 this country was the first to officially recognize the genocide of Armenians), France, Switzerland and Sweden.
