Participant in shootout of religious figures in Ingushetia detained

In Ingushetia, a participant in a shootout between religious figures has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder; he is in a guarded special ward of a hospital.

As "Kavkazsky Uzel" wrote, on July 13, a shootout occurred in Ingushetia, during which two people were wounded. One of the victims was the security guard of the imam of the mosque of the Nasyr-Korst district of Nazran, Khamzat Chumakov. Both wounded belong to the same Ingush teip of the Yevloyevs. The shootout reportedly occurred after a verbal altercation on social media related to disagreements on religious issues.

A participant in the shootout that took place on July 13 on the outskirts of the village of Ekazhevo has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder, Interfax reported on July 22, citing the press service of the Investigative Committee of Russia.

The suspect has been reportedly detained as part of a criminal investigation into an attempt on the life of a 42-year-old resident of Ingushetia. He will be charged in the near future, and investigators are petitioning for a preventive measure in the form of detention. Currently, he is in a special guarded ward of the hospital.

Khamzat Chumakov is a popular preacher among believers, who became famous for his sermons and video messages exposing corruption in government agencies. On September 14, 2010, near the village of Ekazhevo in the Nazran district, Chumakov's car was blown up, as a result of this assassination attempt, his leg was amputated.

In September 2019, the jury acquitted the defendants of the assassination attempt on Chumakov, but considered their guilt proven in terms of illegal possession of weapons and ammunition. The court sentenced one of the defendants to seven years in prison, and the other to 4.5 years. The third defendant was released in the courtroom.
