Barakh Chemurziev sentenced to eight years of administrative supervision

The Ingush activist Barakh Chemurziev, who in February served his full sentence in the case of an extremist community, was sentenced to eight years of administrative supervision.

As "Kavkazsky Uzel" reported, on February 18, Ingush activist Barakh Chemurziev was released from a penal colony in Stavropol Krai, having served his full sentence in the case of an extremist community. A year before his release, Chemurziev asked to replace the remaining part of his sentence with a punishment not related to imprisonment, but the court refused him. In March, the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg recognized the refusal of the court in Stavropol Krai to reconsider the extension of Chemurziev's arrest as a violation of his rights.

For eight years after his release, Barakh Chemurziev is prohibited from leaving his place of residence without notice and from participating in demonstrations, rallies, and marches. He is required to report to the police once a month and coordinate all planned trips in advance, the Fortanga publication reported, citing a source close to the activist.

According to the source, the court justified such a long period of supervision by the fact that Chemurziev was convicted "of a serious crime." The sentence handed down to the activist included only six months of restricted freedom after leaving the colony, as well as a ban on holding public office for four years, the OVD-Info human rights project* notes.

Barakh Chemurziev is a candidate of economic sciences and was an associate professor at the St. Petersburg University of Economics. Before his arrest in 2019, he headed the public movement "Support of Ingushetia" and was a member of the presidium of the World Congress of the Ingush People.
