Magas court finds suspension of Albert Khamkhoev’s torture case lawful
In Magas, a court dismissed a complaint filed by Albert Khamkhoev about the suspension of a criminal case on his torture. According to the human rights defenders’ information, the criminal case has already been suspended 19 times.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that the case on the torture of Albert Khamkhoev, an athlete from Ingushetia, has been suspended many times. Lawyers representing the interests of Albert Khamkhoev indicated in 2021 that the main evidence in the case had already been collected, but investigators did not want to deal with the case. If the fact of torture is proven, the boxer’s sentence in the case on possession of firearms will have to be cancelled.
Albert Khamkhoev claimed that law enforcers were torturing him in order to force him to confess to illegal possession of firearms and aiding and abetting members of illegal armed formations (IAFs). Albert Khamkhoev complained that after his detention, he was beaten, tortured with electric current, and threatened. Later, Timur Albakov claimed that his boss Ibragim Eldjarkiev ordered a pistol to be planted on Albert Khamkhoev. Despite the mentioned fact, the court sentenced the athlete to one and a half years of imprisonment. Albert Khamkhoev continued to fight for justice, demanding an investigation into the facts of torture and the restoration of his good name.
Yulia Fedotova, a lawyer for the “Team Against Torture”*, notes that Albert Khamkhoev continues to be engaged in professional boxing.
Albert Khamkhoev (born in 1992 in Grozny) is a Russian boxer of Ingush origin. He is Russian professional middleweight champion since 2021.
An Ingush human rights defender expressed his doubt about the likelihood of bringing to justice the law enforcers who tortured Albert Khamkhoev.
“The investigation is being conducted in a formal way, the authorities are covering up werewolves in uniform, and there can be no talk of any law ... Under the current power, there is no point in waiting for justice,” the Ingush human rights defender stated.
*The “Team against Torture” (TaT, formerly the “Committee against Torture” – CaT) was created by the lawyers who had earlier worked for the CaT, which was included into the register of the NCOs performing the functions of foreign agents.
