Georgian Parliament tightens law on foreign agents

In the third reading, members of the Georgian Parliament have adopted the “Act on the Registration of Foreign Agents” which introduces the concept of individuals-foreign agents.

The Georgian MPs also adopted amendments to the Law “On Broadcasting”, prohibiting TV companies from receiving foreign funding. The law has been supplemented with provisions that make it unacceptable to receive direct or indirect funding from the placement of social advertising.

On May 14, 2024, amid mass protest actions, the Georgian Parliament adopted the draft law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence”. On March 4, the Georgian parliament also adopted the draft law on the registration of foreign agents, which introduced the concept of an individual as a foreign agent. The draft law “On the Registration of Foreign Agents” and amendments to the Law “On Broadcasting” will deprive non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and media outlets of the opportunity to continue working, state analysts.

The opposition and their supporters call the Law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence” (the law on foreign agents) a “Russian law,” seeing it as a threat to the Georgia’s European path of development. The “Caucasian Knot” has prepared the report entitled “The Main Requirements of the Georgian Law ‘On Transparency of Foreign Influence’.”
