Muslims of Northern Caucasus regions celebrate Eid al-Fitr

Muslims of all regions of Northern Caucasus, except Dagestan, celebrate the holiday of Eid al-Fitr. In Dagestan, Ramadan will end on March 31.

The Muftiate of the Republic of Dagestan announced that the holiday of Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on March 31. The other regions of Northern Caucasus named March 30 as the holiday.

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims must abstain from food and drink during daylight hours. Eid al-Fitr is the holiday of breaking the fast after a month of fasting. On the occasion of the holiday, there is a tradition to receive guests, visit relatives and friends, and also the graves of deceased relatives.

On the evening of March 29, a collective Iftar (the meal eaten by Muslims at sunset to break their fast during Ramadan) was held at the cathedral mosque of Kabardino-Balkaria in honour of the end of the month of Ramadan. Kazbek Kokov, the leader of Kabardino-Balkaria, took part in the celebration, the “Vesti KBR” reports.

Rashid Temrezov, the leader of Karachay-Cherkessia, participated together with other residents of the republic in the festive prayer at the cathedral mosque of the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR).

In Chechnya, republic’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov and other government officials performed a festive prayer in their ancestral village of Akhmat-Yurt.

“We distributed 100,000 food packages, held a charity event in Egypt, and provided assistance to wounded and injured refugees from Palestine. Two mosques were also opened. In general, a huge amount of work has been done,” Ramzan Kadyrov reported.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that food prices rose significantly during Ramadan. The authorities are not taking measures to prevent price increases before the holiday of Eid al-Fitr, residents of Makhachkala note.

The Deputy Mufti of Chechnya have called on entrepreneurs not to raise food prices during Ramadan. Those calls came too late, as the prices have already risen significantly, social media users noted in their comments. On March 17, Ramzan Kadyrov ordered to intensify raids, confiscate food products with unjustified high prices from sellers, and distribute them to those in need.

Earlier, residents of Chechnya reported about the inspection of cars on the border with Dagestan before the holiday of Eid al-Fitr in 2024 as part of the fight against violators of the “resolution on supporting local entrepreneurship.” The police said that “they have orders to confiscate food in favour of children’s institutions.” “They found fault with the chicken prices, saying that we are not patriots of the republic, in Chechnya they sell chickens everywhere, and you buy them in Dagestan, and they confiscated them,” a woman from Chechnya quoted her neighbour as saying.
