ECtHR obliges Azerbaijan to provide information on Armenian POWs
By the end of this January, Azerbaijan shall provide detailed information on the Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) kept in custody. This was stated by Yeghishe Kirakosyan, the Armenian official on international legal issues.
According to official data, Azerbaijan keeps 23 POWs of Armenian nationality. Seven POWs from Nagorno-Karabakh, who are in Azerbaijan, have already been convicted; 16 others are awaiting trial. Former Karabakh leaders have been accused of particularly grave crimes.
Let us recall that after the 2020 war, overall 195 people are considered missing, including 175 military servicemen and 20 civilians. Siranush Sahakyan, the representative of the interests of Armenian POWs at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), claims that 80 people have been forcibly disappeared, but, according to her story, Baku refuses to provide any information about them.
The International Red Cross last visited Armenian POWs in Baku last December.
