Policeman accused in Dalgatov's death case sentenced to colony term
The court has sentenced Islam Atavov, a Makhachkala policeman, to 7.5 years in penal colony for his involvement in the death of the detained Kurban Dalgatov.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the state prosecutor had demanded to sentence Atavov to eight years of freedom deprivation. The suffered party asked to cancel Atavov's pre-trial agreement due to the fact that, in their opinion, he had repeatedly given contradictory testimonies, trying to escape a more severe punishment.
"According to the court, on January 21, 2023, the defendant, in a group of people ... used torture on a citizen brought to the police station, which inadvertently resulted in his death as a result of strangulation," says the Dagestani branch of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) in its telegram channel.
This July, the inquiry was over into the case of 11 Makhachkala policemen accused within the case of Dalgatov's death. On November 5, the court granted the request to release Marat Babaev to the special military operation (SMO) zone in Ukraine.
It is likely that Atavov's sentence will be appealed against, Shamil Khadulaev, the head of the Dagestani Public Oversight Commission (POC), has predicted.
Let us remind you that there are three victims in the case: apart from Dalgatov, two of his acquaintances had been detained and also tortured. None of the defenders had admitted their guilt. According to the case materials, Atavov played a "significant role" in torturing Dalgatov.
