Inmate complains about absence of medical care in Volgograd colony

Sergey Obodenko is serving his sentence in a penal colony located in the Volgograd Region. He suffers from multiple sclerosis, cannot move independently, and needs constant medical treatment, which, according to his wife and advocate, he is not receiving.

Sergey Obodenko, 46, was found guilty of murdering his mother-in-law and attempting to murder his brother-in-law. In February 2021, the Volgograd Regional Court sentenced him to 19 years in a penal colony.

His wife has reported that Sergey is not provided with the medical care he needs due to his illness. "After two years at the penal colony, he can't walk and can only move around in a wheelchair. He can't even hold a spoon ... His health is deteriorating because Sergey is not receiving the daily injections of the drug 'Timexon'," Svetlana Obodenko has explained.

Sergey himself, his wife and Sergey Yanovsky, his advocate, have lodged fifty complaints to all instances, but in the end the inmate's custody regime was tightened and various punishments were imposed on him.

Svetlana Obodenko is sure that the above crime was committed by a relative who lived with her mother in the same apartment and treated her badly. According to her story, her husband had a wonderful relationship with her mother. Besides, Sergey Obodenko is disabled and, due to his illness, could not kill anyone. But Sergey was unable to prove his innocence; he believes that the above relative has ties with law enforcement bodies, which helped him escape punishment.

"It's unbearable. I can't even think about it, I'm scared and hurt <...> They are slowly killing him just because he complains. But how can he not complain if everything hurts; his legs and arms have failed," Svetlana Obodenko has stated.
