Blogger Sofia Angel-Barokko receives threats after leaving SIZO

Sofia Angel-Barokko, a blogger from Maikop, was released from a SIZO (pre-trial prison) under recognizance not to leave the city. After her release, the blogger complained about receiving threats on social networks.

On August 17, investigators dropped the charge of justifying terrorism against Sofia Angel-Barokko (the article stipulates punishment from five to seven years of imprisonment), but accused her of calling for extremism (article stipulates punishment up to five years of imprisonment).

Sofia Angel-Barokko is a video blogger whose videos talk about ancient gods and magic. In August 2023, the blogger was arrested on charges of insulting the feelings of believers and justifying terrorism. Sofia Angel-Barokko has been included in the list of extremists and terrorists.

Sofia Angel-Barokko was released under recognizance not to leave the city after there were no longer any legal grounds to keep her in custody, a blogger’s friend reported. The source noted that the health state of Sofia Angel-Barokko deteriorated after the SIZO. “She suffered three bouts of pneumonia at the SIZO, but she did not receive effective medical treatment,” the resident of Maikop stated.

According to the source, after the blogger was released under recognizance not to leave the city, Sofia Angel-Barokko complained about surveillance. “She began receiving death threats on social networks. There was an attempt to run her over with a car and throw her out of a cafe,” the blogger’s friend said.

In February 2024, the blogger’s mother said that her grandfather and the Sofia’s great-grandfather “was a well-known person” and fell victim to repression. He was rehabilitated, but died in a prison camp.
