Hostage-taking incident becomes second in Southern Federal District within less than three months

An incident with taking hostages by prisoners at the Surovikino penal colony was preceded by a similar incident that occurred in June at a SIZO (pre-trial prison) in Rostov-on-Don. In both cases, attackers declared themselves to be supporters of the “Islamic State”*.

On Friday, at the penal colony No. 19 in Surovikino, prisoners took warders hostage at a meeting of the disciplinary commission, where, among other things, cases of malicious violators were considered.

At least one FSIN (Federal Penitentiary Service) employee was killed, and the attackers declared their affiliation with the “Islamic State”*, the “Baza” Telegram channel reports.

On June 16, arrestees took several warders hostage at the SIZO (pre-trial prison) in Rostov-on-Don. The attackers also called themselves supporters of the “Islamic State”* and demanded a car, firearms, and unhindered exit from the SIZO.

During the assault, law enforcers freed the hostages, and five arrestees who participated in the attack were killed. Two other suspects involved in the hostage-taking were wounded.

*On December 29, 2014, the Supreme Court (SC) of the Russian Federation recognized the organization “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant” (ISIL or IS) as a terrorist international organization and banned its activities in Russia.
