Defence of man accused of hostage-taking at Rostov SIZO challenges verdict

The advocate of Malik Gandaloev, a native of Ingushetia, a figurant in the case of hostage-taking at the Rostov SIZO (pre-trial prison), has filed an appeal complaint against the verdict passed by the Southern District Military Court in the case of his participation in the "Islamic State" (IS)* and the manufacture of explosives. The TASS writes about this with reference to the court's press service.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in March 2023, Ingush law enforcers declared three students wanted, Malik and Ramazan Gandaloev, natives of Ingushetia, and Arsen Gammadov, a native of Dagestan, accused of manufacturing and storing explosives and participating in the activities of a terrorist organization. The Southern District Military Court sentenced Gandaloev to 20 years of freedom deprivation.

According to sources, a "farewell letter of a religious extremist nature" was found in the apartment they had rented. Malik Gandaloev and Gammadov were detained on March 23, and Ramazan Gandaloev himself appeared at the police on March 26.

Gandaloev became the second defendant in the case of hostage-taking at the Rostov-on-Don SIZO; he was arrested under the escape article until August 15.

*On December 29, 2014, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation recognized the organization "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL or IS) as a terrorist international organization and banned its activities in Russia.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
