Dagestani Ministry for Public Health reports 20 killed and 46 injured in militants’ attack

During the militants’ attack, 20 people were killed and 46 others were injured, the Dagestani Ministry for Public Health reported.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on June 23, the Christian holiday of the Holy Trinity, militants attacked an Orthodox church and a synagogue in Derbent, and a road-and-patrol police service (known as DPS) checkpoint was shelled in Makhachkala. According to the preliminary information, fifteen law enforcers and four civilians, including an Orthodox priest, were killed in the attacks.

As a result of the attacks in Makhachkala and Derbent, 46 people were injured, including civilians, reported Tatiana Belyaeva, Dagestani Minister for Public Health.

The days of June 24, 25, and 26 have been declared days of mourning in Dagestan to pay tribute to the victims killed in the militants’ attacks.

The attacks became the first armed incidents in Dagestan within more than a year. The militants’ attack on churches and synagogues interrupted a 13-month calm in the republic. At the same time, it should be noted that earlier, a number of incidents involving attacks on religious figures and places of worship had taken place in Dagestan.
