Martin Kochesoko*, KBR activist, suspected of failing duties of foreign agent

Law enforcers have opened a criminal case against Martin Kochesoko*, an activist from the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), for evading the duties of a foreign agent. The activist living abroad has already been fined twice in absentia under the relevant administrative article, the human rights project "OVD-Info"* has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 25, 2023, the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) added Martin Kochesoko*, the head of the public organization "Khabze" living abroad, to the register of foreign agents. The MoJ stated that the activist had called for a violation of the territorial integrity of Russia and distributed materials by foreign agents.

Since 2006, Martin Kochesoko* has been involved in public activities and was a member of the Circassian Congress. In April 2019, he criticized the ban on a car rally on the Circassian Flag Day in Nalchik and Russian authorities' attitude towards Circassian repatriates.

On March 2, 2021, the Urvan District Court found Martin Kochesoko* guilty of illegal drug dealing and sentenced him to three years of conditional imprisonment.
