Court returns case of journalist Yusupov* to law enforcers

A court in Makhachkala has demanded from law enforcers to eliminate violations in the case of the journalist Idris Yusupov*, accused of failing to fulfil the duties of a foreign agent.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 6, it became known that law enforcers had drawn up a protocol against Idris Yusupov* for non-compliance with the restrictions associated with the status of a foreign agent.

On November 24, 2023, the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) included Idris Yusupov*, a journalist for the "Novoye Delo" (New Cause) outlet, into the list of foreign agents. The journalist explained this by the fact that he took part in the project of the "Civic Assistance" Committee* to provide assistance to prisoners-natives of Northern Caucasus. In February 2024, Yusupov* returned the money received from "Civil Assistance"*, after which he submitted an application to be removed from the register of foreign agents, the human rights project "OVD-Info"* has informed.

Let us recall that Idris Yusupov* made an important Dagestani problem public – he published materials about the practice of regularly detaining believers and registering them with the police. The journalist also held regular solo pickets in defence of his colleague Abdulmumin Gadjiev, an editor of the "Chernovik" (Draft) outlet, Khadji-Murad Donogo, a scientist, and political prisoners; he also picketed in support of Palestine residents.

*Included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) into the register of foreign agents.
