Man accused in case on riots at Makhachkala airport transferred to house arrest

Shakhban Magomedov, a resident of Dagestan, accused in a case on mass unrest at an airport in Makhachkala, has been transferred from a SIZO (pre-trial prison) to house arrest in connection with his disability and the need for medical treatment.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that by December 13, 2023, about 150 people had been arrested in the criminal case on the riots at the Makhachkala airport. One of the arrested suspects was also accused of attacking a law enforcer. The number of those arrested also includes those who simply observed what was happening, states a member of the Public Monitoring Commission (PMC) of Dagestan. In May, it became known that four of those arrested had been additionally charged with violating transport security requirements.

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan agreed to transfer Shakhban Magomedov from the SIZO (pre-trial prison), where the accused man had been kept for more than six months, to house arrest. Shakhban Magomedov requested the court to mitigate his pre-trial restriction measure in connection with his state of health, as he had undergone several surgeries, had one of his lungs removed, and at the SIZO, his health condition worsened.

Shakhban Magomedov, detained on November 4, has a wife and two children. He graduated from a higher education institution, and he was assigned a disability Group II.
