PACE demands international investigation of Politkovskaya's murder

A group of deputies of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has suggested the member countries of the Council to conduct an international investigation into the circumstances of the murder committed last October of Anna Politkovskaya, a journalist of the "Novaya Gazeta" newspaper. The deputies have disseminated the respective statement at the Assembly.

Moscow should ensure the independence of the law enforcement bodies involved in investigating of journalists' murders, runs the text of the statement, as quoted by the RIA "Novosti."

The document presents the data of the "Reporters without Borders," according to which a total of 21 journalists were killed in Russia since 2000.

The statement was signed by 34 parliamentarians from Bulgaria, Germany, Norway, Romania, Moldova, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Georgia, Albania, Serbia and Spain.

We remind you that the day after tomorrow, October 7, is one year after Anna Politkovskaya's murder.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported earlier that presentation of the book "In Memory of Anna Politkovskaya" took place in Paris. The book is a collection of articles written by well-known experts from France and Russia and people who knew the journalist, including human rights activist Elena Bonner and sociologist Andre Glyuksman. The book sums up Anna Politkovskaya's work, and attention is drawn to such problems like the situation in Caucasus and human rights.
