Native of Chechnya dies after being beaten in colony for life prisoners
Arsan Mukaev, a native of Chechnya, sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of killing law enforcers, has died in his penal colony after being beaten up.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that back in 2006, Kazakh authorities extradited Mukaev to Russia at the request of the Russian General Prosecutor's Office (GPO). According to the Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya, Mukaev was among the militants under command of Islam Chalaev, and in 2001, was an accomplice in the murder of 13 people, including the deputy prosecutor of Grozny and policemen.
According to investigators, Mukaev died after being hit on the head with a brick by a cellmate, the ASTRA outlet has reported. He died after being seven days in a coma, the "New DOSH" outlet has informed.
Let us remind you that Mukaev complained to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) that he had confessed under duress and that authorities had failed to conduct a thorough inquiry into his allegations of torture.
In March 2017, the ECtHR obliged Russian authorities to pay Mukaev EUR 45,500 as compensation for his suffered moral harm.
