Court refuses to commute sentence to pensioner from Shakhty within fake case

The Rostov Regional Court has upheld the sentence of Evgenia Maiboroda, a 72-year-old resident of the city of Shakhty, sentenced to 5.5 years in penal colony on charges of spreading fake news about the Russian Army and calls for extremism.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the reason for the criminal case was in her repost of information about the number of perished Russian militaries and in an emotional video. Maiboroda explained her actions by saying that her brother in the city of Dnieper was under the rubble of a building destroyed by shells.

The pensioner has been convicted for her pacifist position; her prosecution is politically motivated, the human rights project "Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial" asserts.

The appeal complaint in the Maiboroda case was considered by the Rostov Regional Court. She asked the judge to "be merciful," but he did not commute the sentence, the "Mediazona"* has reported.

"I'm an old person with a lot of ailments ... It's very difficult for me here because of my age," the publication quotes Evgenia Maiboroda as saying.

The judge noted that Maiboroda would have to spend about 4.5 years in jail, taking into account the sentence already served – the time spent at the SIZO (pre-trial prison), the Telegram channel "NotMoscow Speaking" has noted.

*On September 29, 2021, the Ministry of Justice of Russia included the LLC "ZP" (the legal entity that had established the "Mediazona") into the list of media outlets-foreign agents.
