Defence of raw food blogger Maxim Lyuty claims violations in the case of his child's death
No examination was ever conducted into the death reasons of the child of Maxim Lyuty, a raw food blogger and fasting supporter. Investigators changed their decisions three times on which article to charge Lyuty with, because there were no proofs that the child died from his actions, Alexei Avanesyan, an advocate, has stated.
On April 16, a Sochi court sentenced Maxim Lyuty, who is also the founder of the esoteric club, to eight years in jail, finding him guilty within the case of his baby's death. Investigators believe that Lyuty and his female partner deprived the baby of food, as a result of which he died. In September 2023, a court in Sochi sentenced the baby's mother, Oksana Mironova, to two years of correctional labour.
"My client did not and could not have had any intentions. This was a long-awaited child for the 34-year-old Oksana Mironova and the 43-year-old Maxim Lyuty. Before that, they lived together for two years, but Oksana could not get pregnant. Maxim's accusation is based on a slander against him of his common-law wife," Alexei Avanesyan, the blogger's advocate, asserts.
The case of the baby's death has acquired a great public resonance, and investigators needed to seriously punish the culprit, but they needed proofs, which were absent; and then they found a "weak link" – Oksana Mironova, who gave the testimonies the investigators needed, for which she received a lenient sentence, Mr Avanesyan believes.
"The court has treated Mironova's role of almost a victim from Lyuty. However, she had lived with this 'tyrant; voluntarily for two years. She voluntarily gave birth to a child ... He had fully provided for her accommodation in Sochi, while she did not work anywhere and completely shared Maxim's views on raw food nutrition and fasting. It was her choice not to turn to doctors and give birth at home," the advocate has stated.
Seeing the baby's health condition, Mironova could have consulted doctors, but did not do so, Mr Avanesyan has added, noting that not all premature babies survive; and in fact, there was no examination of why Lyuty's baby had really died.
Maxim Lyuty's mother spoke out in defence of her son in her page in the "VKontakte" social network. She called on supporters of the healthy lifestyle – the like-minded people of her son – to unite and help him, including by raising funds for an advocate.
