Court in Chechnya sends Musaeva's release decision for reconsideration

The Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya has partially satisfied the complaint against the refusal to release Zarema Musaeva on conditional early relief (CER) and ordered the lower court to reconsider the defence's motion. The appellate instance has refused to release Musaeva.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 12, 2023, the court denied Musaeva's CER. The refusal was caused by the political nature of the case, but the rather long remaining custody term and the defence's incorrect informational policy have also played their roles, lawyers then noted.

On July 4, 2023, the court sentenced Musaeva to 5.5 years of freedom deprivation within the case of attacking a policeman. The Chechen SC reduced the term to five years.

Now, the SC has overturned the ruling of the Shali City Court and sent the complaint for new consideration. At the same time, the prosecutor's office and colony bosses have asked to leave the court's decision unchanged, the "Team against Torture" (TaT)* reported in its Telegram channel.

On November 3, 2023, a TaT's* advocate asked the court in Pyatigorsk to overturn Musaeva's sentence due to the unjustified charges and law violations.

*The "Team against Torture" (TaT, formerly the "Committee against Torture" – CaT) was created by the lawyers who had earlier worked for the CaT, which was included into the register of the NCOs performing the functions of foreign agents.
