Court sends Novocherkassk resident to mental hospital for calling for extremism

A resident of Novocherkassk wanted to join a terrorist organization and promoted its activities on a social network, but was not aware of his actions due to insanity, a court ruled.

The verdict was pronounced by the Oktyabrsky District Court of the Rostov Region. A criminal case was instituted against the resident of Novocherkassk for his posts on social networks.

The posts were discovered by FSB officers and sent for psychological and linguistic examination. According to the law enforcers’ version, the man was a supporter of the terrorist organization “Freedom of Russia Legion” banned in Russia and tried to join it, the “Interfax-Yug” (Interfax-South) reported with reference to the FSB.

In the posts left on social networks by the resident of Novocherkassk, experts found “signs of a call for violent actions against persons of Russian nationality.” Forensic psychiatrists declared the man insane.

The court took into account that the man did not understand the social danger of his actions and sentenced him to compulsory treatment in a psychiatric hospital. In this regard, the defendant was released from criminal liability for public calls for extremism.

The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported about the case instituted against Yevgenia Maiboroda, a 72-year-old resident of the Rostov Region, who was accused under the same article. On January 29, the court sentenced the pensioner to 5.5 years of imprisonment. In addition to “military fakes,” public prosecution identified calls for extremism in the pensioner’s posts.
