Chechen Imams treat Nikita Zhuravel's burning Koran as offensive

The Imams from Chechnya, who are the suffered party in Nikita Zhuravel's case, have stated that the burning of the Koran had insulted them and all Muslims. One of them has added that watching the video of burning the Koran down led to a jump in his blood pressure.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 2, the Visaitovsky District Court in Grozny began considering the case of Nikita Zhuravel, a Volgograd resident. At the session on November 28, the Imams of Chechen mosques stated that Nikita's act had offended the feelings of Muslims and caused them moral harm.

The prosecution of Zhuravel is politically motivated and aimed at intimidating the society, the human rights project "Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial" has stated.

Five Chechen Imams, recognized as the suffered party, have spoken at the above court of Grozny. They stated that Zhuravel's act caused "enormous moral harm to all Muslims."

Isa Tasuev, the Imam of the mosque located in the "Avtotrest" settlement, has treated the burning of the Koran as an immoral act, the "Chechnya Today" News Agency reports.

Sacred scriptures of any religion must be protected; and everyone must treat them with respect, Apti Barzukaev, the Imam of the mosque from the Sheikh-Mansur District, has noted.

Khasan Gorshuev, the Imam of the mosque from the "Turbina" settlement, said that when he watched the video, his blood pressure jumped. "This is worse than an insult for me; I felt bad, I stopped watching it. My blood pressure rose," the "Chechnya Today" quotes him as saying.
